kitchen counter options?

i need a cheap solution for a new kitchen. i can not afford things like corian granite or marble. just way over my budget. i hate formica/laminate! everyone suggests concrete but i tried a small test piece and wont try it again.i just cant trust it will turn out after all the work. and to do it better costs as much as granite cause the proper concrete mix is pricey. soooo it seems there is absolutely nothing left. please help! oh and i hate tile! im doomed to use the crappy formica aren’t i??

There are some high-end laminates that are actually very impressive and look like granite. A close inspection of course reveals the truth but I saw some the other day that was identical to granite in appearance and even feel, (until you knock on it). These do cost about 50% more than stock laminate but you ought to take a look. Another option is Bamboo which is higher than laminate but not quite as high as Corian.
