Laminate Table Tops

Laminating metal table top?

I have a metal table that already has a laminate topping, I would like to relaminate it with another color, but removing the old looks difficult to me. Is it recommended to remove the original first, and if so how? Is it possible to scuff up the existing surface and put new laminate on top of the old? What sort of glue do I use? All answers appreciated. Thank you!

As long as it is already laminated, you can easily laminate over it. Use a palm sander with 80 grit paper to scuff it. You will want to use contact cement to glue the new laminate on. Apply a coat to both the table top and the laminate. Allow it to dry until it is just a little tacky. Place slats of wood, dowels, etc. along the table top, then position the laminate over it. Starting in the middle of the top, pull the dowels out, pressing the laminate down as you go. Be sure it’s where you want it. Once contact cement bonds, it won’t release without ruining the laminate. After you have all of the dowels removed, and have pressed the sheet of laminate down, go over the entire surface with a “J” roller. You can get one at a rental yard. Roll from the center to the edges to make sure that you remove any bubbles. Trim the edges with a router or file and you are done. Hope this helps.
